Welcome to my first ever flight review!!! In August 2017, my family and I went on a trip to Austria and Croatia. First we went to Croatia, but we were required to take a connection in Austria.

Although you can’t see it from the picture, the lines at Newark Airport’s Terminal B are realllly long! Or maybe this is normal for the summer season.

We boarded the flight around 5:20 PM, which was on time.

As we boarded, the first impressions of the cabin and flight to come were very nice! The seats were spotless and very comfortable, the boarding music was very nice (Mozart!), etc.

According to SeatGuru, each seat on this 767 was 17 inches wide and had 30 inches of pitch, which might be tight for some. However, I didn’t even notice the tightness, and the seats themselves were very comfortable. The 2-3-2 configuration also helped the plane feel more comfortable overall because there was only one middle seat per row of seven seats.

It also helped that this plane was recently refurbished. Despite being built over 26 years ago, the plane was only delivered to Austrian Airlines in 2007. From 2013, Austrian Airlines completely refurbished its long-haul fleet (which consists of six 767-300er aircraft and six 777-200er aircraft) with a brand new interior, which includes new economy class and business class seats, a new cabin design, and new 9-inch inflight entertainment screens.

The inflight entertainment screen had a decent number of movies and TV shows, with 59 movies. I did not really count the number of TV shows, but there seemed to be quite a bit of them as well. There was also an airplane exercise video.

We took off around 5:40 PM, which was on time.

There were awesome views both of Newark and of Manhattan as we took off.

Soon after takeoff, we were served some pretzels from Austria and a drink (I chose Coke).

About an hour later it was time for dinner. Austrian Airlines caters from Do and Co, which is arguably the best airline catering company in the world. You can order what is essentially a premium economy meal in advance for 15 euros. However, we elected to take the free meal on board. Also keep in mind that at that time, Austrian Airlines did not offer premium economy. Now they are rolling it out on their long haul fleet.

Anyway, on board our choices were chicken or pasta. We got the pasta meal, which was awesome. It consisted of really good pasta with mushrooms, a salad with dressing, a chocolate mousse (which I only had on the ride back, but was as good as a mousse on the ground!), a drink, and a WARM bread roll. We even got to choose out the bread out of a bread basket! Overall, Austrian Airlines definitely deserves the awards it has received for its food in the past.

After dinner, we started our atlantic crossing. I decided to get a few hours of sleep over the Atlantic.

One thing I should add is that at dinner service (and throughout the whole flight for that matter), the service was exceptional. The flight attendants always served everything with a smile, and were always happy to help you when you needed it. No wonder they won the Skytrax award for the best cabin crew in Europe this year! 😉

A few hours later we were served a snack. As is the norm for overnight transatlantic travel, business class travelers get a full dinner and breakfast service before landing while economy class travelers get a dinner service and a light snack before landing.

We were served and extremely sweet muffin with a drink. I chose apple juice.

At this point, we were getting pretty close to Vienna!

We touched down around 7:20 I think, which was actually 30 minutes early. While this is probably a good thing for most travelers, for us it meant our 4 hour 30 minute layover turned into a 5-hour layover! 😡

From there we had a fairly quick taxi to the Concourse G gate. We parked alongside OE-LAZ, another 767. This plane would actually end up being our ride home!

After getting off the plane, we went straight to the Sky Lounge (non-Schengen), which Priority Pass members have access to. I passed out there (don’t worry, not literally 🙂) and got a good three-hour nap.

Overall, this flight was one of the best transatlantic flights I have ever taken. The pros include great inflight entertainment, tasty food, and attentive service. The cons are probably the tight seating and lack of WiFi. That’s right: Austrian Airlines does not offer WiFi on their 767s.

I would definitely suggest this flight for anyone who is traveling somewhere in Europe but is forced to take a connection. I would definitely not recommend this flight for people who need to stay connected through WiFi in the air because there are many other options which do offer WiFi.
